Real king...well, probably Henry for sheer entertainment value. For awesomeness, it would have to be Queen Elizabeth I. Most fascinating to study might be Richard III.

Of course Henry VIII is the most fun to read about, but Victoria needs props too. Okay, now for my absolute favorite - "Prince" John! I think the only reason I like him so well is because he is hilariously vilified in pop culture - Disney's Robin Hood or Robin Hood: Men in Tights, anyone?

Queen Victoria, because that movie with Emily Blunt made me cry.
ReplyDeleteKing Henry I 1100 - 1135 ,since he attempted to name his daughter his successor and make her the first queen of England. Although at that time they saw a woman as unfit to rule so when he he died they named his nephew successor instead plunging them into civil war with a country divided. But I still applaud his efforts and loyalty to his daughter :o)

ReplyDeleteI kind of favor Elizabeth I. There was so much going on during her reign, particularly exploring the New World.
ReplyDeleteYou have to go with Bloody Mary, Love her or hate her she was England's first Queen and paved the way for Elizabeth. Although I really wonder had poor Lady Jane not been executed and Mary never took over the throne how things would've turned out.

ReplyDeleteMy favourite would have actually have to be three favourites - Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth II. I think each in their own way have been strong, powerful (not in the ruling sense) women, and I think they have been good for us British - and women -during their reigns. Especially considering they were all Queens when sons were the "desired" heirs. So glad the law has been changed now, so that Prince William's first child will become the next monarch after him, no matter what the child's sex.

ReplyDeleteI would say Queen Victoria since I have always been very obsessed with the Victorian era but now thanks to Gilt, I am obsessed with the tudors and the court of Henry XVIII too! Yay! ^_^
I'm not sure if I have a favorite king. King Henry VIII was an idiot. I know I'm not supposed to like Anne Boleyn, especially since she stole Henry from Catherine (of Aragon) but she was just so... fascinating..at least on the TV show. She did manage to influence Henry, greatly and I have to hand it to her for that, even though she's kind of a ...uhm, I'll refrain from mentioning.

ReplyDeleteQueen Victoria got my vote when she showed up on Doctor Who (a 10th Doctor and Rose episode called Tooth and Claw. It's amazing.) I was predisposed to like her after learning a bit about her in my Victorian lit class, but that episode sealed the deal.
ReplyDeleteTruthfully, I don't know much about the monarch history, but I have to say I'm fascinated with the culture surrounding both Marie Antoinette and Queen Victoria - both so intriguing! As I'm also in love with current England (I was born there), I do have to say I have the utmost respect for Queen Elizabeth II - classy and lovely.

Yay! Thanks for the giveaway! My favorite king would have to be Henry VIII. Cliche, I know. I blame the Tudors. Another is Juana the Loca. I read a book about her that had my heart breaking for her (The Last Queen). And then there's poor Catherine of Aragon.

ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to go with Anne Boleyn. I've been fascinated by the Tudor court ever since I remember reading a Royal Diaries book about young Elizabeth when I was maybe 8 or 9. It's amazing the way Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth are connected, and the brief time Anne had at court to make such a lasting impact on her country.

In 9th grade I had to pick an English queen/king to do a paper about as if we were them in the present. I happened to pick Queen Elizabeth Tudor. She was a brave & somewhat ruthless queen, which i loved. Awesome giveaway question, thanks!

Even though he wasn't the greatest husband, King Henry VIII completely fascinates me. I am equally as fascinated by Anne Boleyn and even though I'm not sure exactly how I feel about her, it's obvious she must've been quite a woman to capture the King the way she did.
ReplyDeleteI've always been intrigued by the recent royals - the current queen and Diana - even though she would never have been queen herself. I grew up in the '80s when women's magazines constantly featured Diana. She seemed so sophisticated and I liked that she cared so much about her boys - they were often included in pictures of her. I was so sad when she died. My aunt called us when it happened, it was the middle of the night and woke us up!
